Judges Callie van der Merwe The Design Partnership  Biography Callie van der Merwe served as the vice president of IID (South African Interior Design Institute for the year 2008/9. He is a member of SACAP and helped facilitate membership of the IID. He studied architecture at the University of Port Elizabeth qualifying with a distinction and won the South African National Corobrik student of the year award in 1990. This was followed by a two year stint as the third year Studio Master at the University of Port Elizabeth, whilst at the same time establishing an architectural practice with Francois van der Merwe. It was in these two years, 1991 and 1992 that they won a third place in the Everite Facades Architecture Award and the first place in the Laminate Industries (PG Bison) Retail award for interiors respectively. The latter award brought them to Johannesburg where they established Design Partnership in Pretoria (1994) and eventually fleshed out into 3 independent, but complimentary business units Branding, Retail & Hospitality and Architecture, each headed by a different partner. The work of the Design Partnership has been covered extensively in the media both locally and abroad and the partners are interviewed and quoted regularly as authorities in this field. On the Retail front they have been responsible for the development of iconic brands such as Mugg & Bean, New look Wimpy, New look Ocean Basket, new look Fishaways, new look Mimmos, Reggies, Toys R Us, Doppio Zero and Tashas. They have consulted to Edcon extensively. Current Architecture includes the extensions and upgrade of Riverside mall and Musgrave mall as well as extensive housing schemes in Mauritius. The branding department has just been appointed for some new and exciting below the line work for Wimpy. Back to Judges |
